Kate McCutchan Director of Music Ministry, Choir Director and Accompanist
Growing Our Choir! Help us lift the hearts and spirits of all who hear us. Please consider giving your time & talents to your church... Your voice is what makes us strong. Be a part of our creation and let the light of Unity shine!
Kate McCutchan was born and raised in Northern Virginia. She's the oldest of four sisters who remain close. On her father's side were crafters of musical instruments; her mother and grandmother were pianists and singers. Report cards from Kate's early school years often asked if the family could just get her to stop singing all the time!
After two years at East Carolina University and a brief marriage, Kate traveled West to live in Utah, California and Wyoming for a total of 16 years. Her jobs during that time included working on a dude ranch in Jackson Hole, waitressing, working for a florist, and writing for the LA Times as a columnist. She had five articles in the LA Times with her by-line as a stringer covering the first Sundance Film Festivals. She also worked as a secretary for the US Ski Team. She learned to ski and love the mountains. In California, she traded her TV for an autoharp and began writing songs by the Stanislaus River.
Relocating to Sarasota, Florida, with a friend, Kate sang with The Madrigal Singers from a community college and traveled with them to Greece, where they sang in churches and universities on an incredible ten-day trip.
Moving to Pennsylvania in 1992, she began working for Unity when Claudell County was the minister. For the first time, she was able to make her living from music - this happy circumstance goes on today: She has 30 piano students, performs for seven-to-ten retirement homes a month, and has been Music Director for Unity for over 20 years.
